Who is Mountain Girl?
My name is Anna Humphries.
Ever since I can remember, I've loved the great outdoors.
Whether i'm hiking, climbing, running muddy obstacle courses or building fires;
I just love getting outside into the elements of nature.
As a young girl in school, I found my ways of life different to most others.
Often i'd get called a 'Tomboy' and felt what I enjoyed was a 'boy's life'.
Most of all I hated pink and still do.
But the passion inside me never changed, I kept climbing the trees, wearing the shorts, playing with the toy dinosaurs, wearing blue or red or green and I liked my hair cut short. I kept getting called the names too but it didn't stop me doing what I loved.
By High School the pressure had mounted so much that I decided I had to let my hair grow long to at least 'look like a girl'. I hated that.
But my adventures still very much continued.
I completed my Gold DofE Award, skipping Bronze and Silver because I liked taking big challenges.
I became a Scout Leader in 2010 and fell in love with the possibiliites of outdoor activities for young people and adults.
Since then I've developed my fire lighting and bushcraft skills which has led me to work as a Bear Grylls Instructor with the Bear Grylls Survival Academy, a company that gives me so many amazing opportunties in doing what I love as equally as allowing me to use my skills to help them grow.
I've worked alongside Bear on some of his TV shows and stunts, inspiring others to get outside.
I qualified as a Mountain Leader in 2016 which enables me to guide other people up mountains within the UK, a job I love!
It is only now do I realise that I am who I am. I'm not sorry for it nor am I arrogant.
I am merely proud of myself for standing up in the face of adveristy.
The times I had changed to please people just made me unhappy. I don't ever want to live a lie, nor do I want others to.
I have learnt to continue to be who I am and always have been. I ignore the stereotypes, the bullies, the feminists, the misogynists and the sexists. And all the other people who make peoples lives a misery.
Instead I focus on who I am, what I love and what makes myself and others happy.
I instill this into the Scouts I lead and genuinely do things to make people happy.
I love inspiring others into the great outdoors, encouraging them to be who they are. Especially but not exclusively, women, who feel they don't belong out here, as well as young people who are missing out on adventure because society has led them to believe they can't do it.
I'm still learning that you can do anything as long as you have the passion to drive yourself forward and the willingness to learn along the way.
If you're not sure what your passion is, just ask yourself 'what makes me happy?'
Then be that you!
I have 3 core values that I now follow in life to help me stay focused and positive in who and what I am:
Adventure. Love. Happiness.
I am a girl. I love the mountains. I am Mountain Girl.
I am me.
